The eThekwini Municipality wishes to inform residents that reduced water supply affecting parts of Pinetown, Durban North, and surrounding areas will continue following an unexpected shutdown of a repaired pump at the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works. · The pump, which is one of four supplying raw water to the plant, initially failed on Monday, 5 October 2026, creating a supply shortfall of approximately 50 million litres per day. · The City's bulk water provider, uMngeni-uThukela Water, reinstalled the unit in phases over the past two days. However, during testing on Thursday, 8 October 2026, the pump stopped operating without system diagnostics recording an immediate cause. Technical teams from uMngeni-uThukela Water are conducting diagnostic assessments to resolve the issue. · uMngeni-uThukela Water has indicated that a accurate timeline for full restoration will be provided once technical investigations conclude. · The remaining raw water supply to the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works from Nagle Dam which accounts for approximately 76 percent of the plant's operational capacity remains fully functional. · The City is closely monitoring reservoir levels and will provide further updates as additional information is received from UUW. Residents and businesses are advised of a planned interruption to the water supply on the Southern Aqueduct pipeline from 06h00 on Tuesday, 29 September, until 06h00 on Thursday, 1 October. · The shutdown is required to facilitate the construction and tie-in of two major connection chambers under Work Package 6 in Westville. · This is a critical milestone in the project and will affect water supply to parts of the Inner West, Central, and South regions. · The interruption will enable contractors to undertake work for the new Southern Aqueduct Pipeline Upgrade Project. · The Southern Aqueduct project is being implemented in several work packages. Residents and businesses are advised of a planned reduction in bulk water supply on the Southern Aqueduct from Wednesday, 12 August at 08h00 to Friday, 14 August at 08h00. · The City's Water Operations Department will shut down the existing 1 200mm pre-stressed concrete pipeline to allow contractors to carry out sectional repair work in preparation for the new Southern Aqueduct Pipeline Upgrade Project. · The existing 1 200mm steel pipeline will remain operational and will continue supplying water to the western, central and southern regions. · The sectional repair work will take place at the intersection of Perth Road and Hi Wycombe Road in Westville. · The City will closely monitor reservoir storage levels throughout the shutdown.
