What to ask before you hire
General questions worth asking any supplier. They are not about Erasmus and Sons Plumbing in particular.
Borehole drilling
- Will the borehole be sited by a survey before drilling, and is that in the quote?
- Is the price per metre, and what depth and length of casing does the quote assume?
- Is a yield test included, and will you give me the results in writing?
- Does my municipality require the borehole to be registered, and will you help with it?
Pumps and pressure systems
- What flow rate and pressure does my house need, and how was the pump sized for it?
- Is a pressure vessel or controller included, so the pump does not run every time a tap opens?
- Who does the electrical connection, and will they issue a certificate of compliance for it?
- What warranty applies to the pump, and who services it?
Filtration
- Has my water been tested, and which contaminants is the system meant to remove?
- How often do the filters or cartridges need replacing, and what do replacements cost?
- Is it a whole-house or a single-tap system, and what flow rate can it handle?
Rainwater harvesting
- How much water can my roof collect in an average year here, and what tank size does that suit?
- Are a leaf screen and a first-flush diverter included?
- Will the water be used for drinking, and if so, what treatment does it need?
Any plumbing work
- Will a PIRB-registered licensed plumber do or sign off the work, and will you issue a plumbing certificate of compliance?
- Is the quote written, and does it list labour, materials and call-out fees separately?
